Dutch. New Amsterdam. Founded to be a trading port. Became New York because because England took over and renamed it that.
Quakers? (characteristics)
Were mostly democratic, least strict, and most tolerable to religious groups of Colonial America. They didn't believe in slavery or war, good relations with Native Americans, and believed in freedom of speech for women.

Jamestown.
What made them so successful?

Bacon's Rebellion?
Man in the new first settlement of Jamestown along with many others, didn't like the Native Americans so he asked the governor if he could kill them or if he could help but the governor said no because he had a good fur trade with the indians. So "bacon went crazy and started attacking all of the indian villages then tried to attack his own settlement and was then killed.
Mercantilism?
The belief that to become wealthy a country must collect large ammounts of gold and silver. Sell more good than you buy from other countries.(self sufficient) Supplied England with raw materials.
Navigation Acts?
(1660) Required that all goods must be shipped to and from America-England using only English ships. Colonists found ways to smuggle goods to other countries.
Enlightment?
Believed that people should use reason and natural laws to shape society. (John Locke) believed a persons mind were a blank state when they were born and were shaped by education and experience.
The Great Awakening?
(1700's) people had turned away from religion, but ministers started holding revivals where they stressed about being born again. This reasurence of religion was known as The Great Awakening.
