Before hangul was made, korean people borrowed (and used) hanja.
Nevertheless, hanja was not suitable for expressing Korean because Korean and Chinese are different.
Moreover, many people could not write the characters because hanja is difficult to learn.
The great King Sejong realized this and together with scholars made Hangdul suitable to Korean.
And then, (he, hon) made various kinds of books in order to teach the common people this new writing system.
