Truman Doctrine

An ideological speech by President Truman in 1947 where he promised to pledge assistance to any country threatened by “armed minorities”- which clearly referred to communism.


Asked and obtained from Congress for millions of dollars to stop communist growth in Turkey and Greece.


This ended US isolationism and ended US policy of tolerance and accommodation towards Soviet Union.


Marshall Plan

An economic plan to reduce the appeal of communism to European countries recovering from devastation of WWII.


Pumped in millions of dollars to West European countries such as Britain, France, Italy.


Was also offered to East European countries but Stalin forced East European countries to not accept the MP.



Stalin felt offended that US was using Marshall Plan to spread capitalism into East Europe which he felt was Soviet sphere of influence

Explain how Truman Doctrine caused Cold War

Caused USSR to feel angry as Stalin felt TD was a unilateral, unfair declaration of war against Soviet Union


TD led to ideological bipolarity- one based on democracy and the other based on communism


TD led to start of Cold War because it led to irreconcilable, irreversible end of wartime alliance between USA and USSR
