Cold War

A time of political hostility that existed between the Soviet Union and its allies and the US and its allies from 1945 to 1990.

Political Ideology

A set of beliefs and ideas that influence how a person or group acts; A “political moral code” or world view.

Communism

A political Ideology that calls for a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs.

Modern Democracy

Government of the people that secures the separation of powers, basic civil rights / human rights, religious liberty and separation of church and state.

Capitalism

An economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.

World Superpower

A country that has the capacity to project dominating power and influence anywhere in the world, and sometimes, in more than one region of the globe at a time.

Tension

The feeling of nervousness, lack of trust, and aggravation that causing strained relations between countries.

Escalate

To become or cause to become more intense or serious.

Economics

The study of the system of making and trading things of value. Usually divided into goods (physical things) and services (things done by people). It assumes there is medium of exchange, which in the modern world is a system of finance (money).

Military Posturing

The actions of the military to show readiness, strength, skill and condition.

Military Positioning

The strategy of placing your military in strong positions before a war begins.

World Domination

A single social or political authority holding power over all of the planet.

Influence

when one group has an effect on another, or has power over them.

Sphere of Influence

The areas where a powerful country has the ability to effect development.

Containment

Keeping something under control. (n this case Communism.

Proxy War

a war instigated by a major power that does not itself become involved.

Nuclear Arms Race

The push to be the most powerful military in the world. (to have the most nuclear weapons)

Mutual Assured Destruction

A military strategy and in which a full-scale use of nuclear weapons by two or more opposing sides would cause the complete annihilation of both the attacker and the defenders.

Korean War (conflict)

A Cold War conflict, fought in the early 1950s between the United Nations, supported by the United States, and the communist Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea). The war began in 1950, when North Korea invaded South Korea.

Vietnam War (conflict)

A Cold War conflict pitting the U.S. and the remnants of the French colonial government in South Vietnam against the indigenous but communist Vietnamese independence movement, the Viet Minh, following the latter's expulsion of the French in 1954.

Direct Military Conflict

Open, armed, often prolonged fighting carried on between nations.
