John F. Kennedy
Kennedy ran against Nixon in 1960. Cold war was a major issue. Missile gap had occurred, and that we were behind. Nixon ran under experience. First televised presidential debate. There were 4. First was the most important, not about issues, it was about appearances.
Flexible Response
Kennedy’s flexible response was one of the main polices in the Cold War.
-Wants military flexible enough to be able to respond to anything, emphasis on Special Forces. Kennedy increased military budget, the first year increased by 15%. He was interested in closing the missile gap. 1963: US has 424 ICBM.
Peace Corps
1961: created Peace Corps: volunteer group that went to underdeveloped nations to improve living conditions. Had potential to affect cold war, but indirectly.
Bay of Pigs
Fidel Castro: gave kennedy the most problems, Cuban Revolutionary, US controls Cuba in one way or another. Wanted to overthrow American Influence. Lawyer, overthrew Cuban govt. in 1959. Important figure in Cuba. Tries to eliminate Any US influence.

Eisenhower began planning to overthrow Castro. 1960- President Eisenhower trained CIA Cuban exiles for an invasion. Briefed kennedy on operations, named the bay of pigs invasion. Kennedy implements invasion. Cold war event. Invasion lasted 3 days. Disaster. Soviets made appearance on 2nd day. They surrendered after 3 days. Early Cold War Defeat.

1962- US able to negotiate exchange for prisoners. Provided 53 million in food and medical supplies.
Berlin Wall
Summer 1961- Berlin: divided by east and west, located in East Germany. Living conditions better in West Berlin, than East Berlin, people began crossing over. Build Fence around West Berlin then became a wall, which was known as the Berlin Wall. It isolated West Berlin, to prevent people from entering. Kennedy protested, another Cold War defeat. Wall becomes symbol of US and Soviet. Kennedy visits wall in 1963 and made speech at wall, he identifies with the West Berliners “Ich bien ein Berliner”. He butchered the language, he tried to say he was a berliner, but ends up saying “I am a jelly donut.”
Cuban Missile Crisis
Cuban missile Crisis: October 1962 U-2 plane flying over Cuban took photos of missile cites over construction. Does Cuba have the resources to construct missile cites? Soviets building cites. Kennedy vs. krushev stand off. Cuba is 90 miles away from US.

October 22nd: kennedy went on TV and told public of missile, US preparing, ordering Naval Blockade of Cuba. Soviet Fleet heading to Cuba
October 26th: Kennedy receives message/proposal form Krucheav; he would remover missile cites if kennedy would publicly announce he would not invade cuba again. Kennedy doesn’t respond.
October 27th: reports of Soviet officials burning documents, sign of impending war. U-2 was shot down over Cuba. Americans tense. Another proposal from Kruchev: he would remove missiles in cuba if US removed cites in Turkey.
Talks to attorney general, told to take first proposal.
Saves Kennedy’s foreign policy, cold war victory.
Earned reputation as “cold warrior”
