Arms Race

Cold War competition between the U.S. and the Soviet Union for superior military power.

Berlin Airlift

1. a 327 day operation in which the U.S. and British Planes flew food and supplies into West Berlin after the Soviets blockaded the city.





Berlin Wall

1. a concrete wall the separated East Berlin and West Berlin from 1961-1989. This wall was built by the Communist East German Government to prevent its citizens from fleeing to the West.


Communism

1. A political system in which the government owns all property and dominates all aspects of life in a country.




Containment

A U.S. policy designed to resist further expansion of communism around the world.

Domino Theory

1. the idea that if a nation falls under communist control, nearby nations will also fall under communist control.

1. 1950s; Wisconsin senator claimed to have list of communists in American gov't, but no credible evidence; took advantage of fears of communism post WWII to become incredibly influential; "McCarthyism" was the fearful accusation of any dissenters of being communists.


Korean War

1. The conflict between Communist North Korea and Non-Communist South Korea. The United Nations (led by the United States) helped South Korea.


Limited Test Ban Treaty

1. a 1963 treaty in which the U.S. and the Soviet Union agreed not to conduct nuclear weapons tests in the atmosphere.

Communist party defeats the nationalist in China. Nationalist are forced into Tawian.

Attacks by Senator Joseph McCarthy on people suspected of being communist during the 1950s.
