Alzheimer's Disease
Abrupt onset with rapid changes in function followed by periods of plateaus in a series. CT or MRI show multiple lesions of the cerebral cortex and subcortical structures
Vascular Dementia
A degenerative brain disease that particularly affects the frontal and temporal lobes. Early signs include personality change, loss of social skills and inhibitions, emotional blunting, language abnormalities. Common onset between 50 and 60 years with death occurring in 2 to 5 years
Picks disease
A central nervous systemd disorder, typically developing between 40 and 60 years of age. Altered vision, loss of coordination, abnormal movements with rapidly progressing dementia
Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease
A slowly progressive neurological condition characterized by tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural instability. Dementia affects 20 to 60% of people with this diagnosis
Parkinson's Disease
An inherited, dominant gene disease primarily involving cerebral atrophy, demyelination, and enlargement of brain ventricles. Initially choreiform movements that are continuous during waking hours. Personality changes followed by memory loss, decreased mental functioning and other signs of dementa. Begins in late 30's to early 40's and may last 10 to 20 years before death
Huntington's Disease
Characterized by a disturbance in memory that results directly from the physiological effects of a general medical condition or the persisting effects of a substance such as alcohol or other drugs. Sufficiently severe to cause marked impairment in social or occupational functioning and represents a significant decline from previous function
