Cofitachequi
an Indian tribe described in the accounts of 16th-century Spanish explorers Hernando de Soto and Juan Pardo as being located in modern-day South Carolina, has long puzzled historians. Distinguished by their burial practices and unusual architecture, the Cofitachequi were probably located close to the mouth of the Wateree River and spoke a language that was part of the Catawban linguistic group.
