Co-Transport & absorption of glucose in the ileum

●Glucose is absorbed into the bloodstream in the small intestine-ileum (final part of mammals small intestine)

●concentration of glucose is too low for glucose to diffuse out into blood,so glucose is absorbed from the lumen of the ileum by Co transporters

●Co-Transporters are a type of carrier protein

●they bind two molecules at a time

●concentration gradient of 1 molecule is used to move the other molecule against its own concentration gradient

Ileum

Epithelial cells lining the ileum have micro villi, finger like projections to increase the surface area

They also have an increased number of protein channels & carrier molecules in their membrane

Method of Co-Transport

1.●Sodium ions actively tansported out of epithelial cells in the ileum, into the blood by the sodium-potassium pump

●This creates a conc gradient,as there is a higher conc of sodium ions in the lumen of the ileum than inside the cell

2.●sodium ions diffuse from lumen of ileum to to epithelial cells down their concentration gradient,Via sodium-glucose Co-transporter protein

●Co transporter carries glucose into cell with sodium,so conc of glucose inside cell increases

3.●Glucose diffuses out of cell into blood down conc gradient through protein channel,by facilitated diffusion
