C.N. I
carries Olfactory Input to the brain via the Olfactory bulb and tract- interpreted in the uncus of each temporal lobe
C.N. II
The Optic Nerve carries about a million neuron fibers back from the retina of each eye to the brain via the Optic Nerves, Chiasma, and Tracts.
Interpretation near the calcarine sulcus of each occipital lobe
CN VIII
Often called the auditory nerve. Also carries input on equilibrium. Also called the vestibulocochlear nerve.
Interpretation in the superior temporal gyrus of each temporal lobe.
CN III
Carries input TO the eye area (along with CN IV and VI). Controls four of the six external eye muscles along with parasympathetic control over some smooth muscles in the eye (for focusing and controlling the amount of light entering the eye).
CN IV and VI
Carries input TO the eye area. Voluntary control of one muscle each.
CN V
Largest cranial nerve- the trigeminal nerve. Primarily a sensory nerve. Also supplies motor fibers to the muscles for chewing. Carries sensations of pain, thermal, light and deep touch from facial areas.
CN VII
Motor nerve to the muscles of facial expression. Sensory components bring in taste from anterior parts of the tongue. Motor innervates lacrimal glands.
CN IX
Mixed nerve supplying motor and sensory innervation to the pharynx tissues and the back of the tongue. Parasympathetic control over the largest saliviary glands (parotids).
CN XII
Motor nerve that controls all of the significant muscles that help move the tongue.
CN X
Serves the head and neck, as well as innervating the thorax and abdomen structures. 80% afferent. Major visceral component is parasympathetic.
CN XI
Motor nerve from medulla oblongata and the spinal cord's upper cervical area. A few of it's fibers join with the vagus. Innervates the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and the trapezius.
