Pinacocytes
thin flat cells which line the exterior surface of sponge body wall. Can be moderatly contractile which allows slight changes in sponge body shape and control of water flow
Choanocytes
flagellated cells with a collar like ring of microvilli surrounding the flagellum. flagella motion creates water currents through the sponge
Microvilli filters food particles from the water
Archaeocyte
(Amoeboid cells)
totipotent- can transform into all other sponge cell types, but specialized for certain tasks such as reproduction, transportation etc. Mainly located in the Mesohyl,
Cnideria
(General Characteristics)
All aquatic and mostly marine.
exhibit tissue level organization, but not muscle and nerves.
Diploblastic- bodies are constructed from 2 basic embryonic germ layers the gastrodermis (gut lining) and the Epidermis (outer covering).
Rudimentarly decentralized nerve network
Mesohyl
a jellylike matrix located between the exterior and interior sponge surfaces.
Cnidocytes or Cnidoblasts
cells which produce nematocytes
Nematocytes
flid gilled capsules that enclose a coiled hollow tube. they are used for capturing prey, defense, and attachment to substrates. Some possess powerful neurotoxins that paralyze prey
Poriferan Classification
based on composition and shape of spicules.
Pinacocytes
thin flat cells which line the exterior surface of sponge body wall. Can be moderatly contractile which allows slight changes in sponge body shape and control of water flow
Spicules
Rigid hooks and spikes which are made from Calcium Carbonate or Silica. Secreted by archaeocytes.
Choanocytes
flagellated cells with a collar like ring of microvilli surrounding the flagellum. flagella motion creates water currents through the sponge
Microvilli filters food particles from the water
Spongin Fibers
Made from Collagen. Flexible. Provide Scaffolding

dink
a magical dinosaur who eats livers, kneecaps, and sells kidneys. he can get you some, very good quality and cheap. if you cheat him and feel something around your ankle it is probobly him trying to gnaw your entire leg off. there will be a live demonstration of this tonight. in the room next door. do not ask how he wronged dink. i lik
