Systolic blood pressure

The systolic blood pressure reading indicates the period when the pressure within the arteries is the greatest, during contraction of the ventricles.

The diastolic reading indicates the lowest point of pressure between ventricular contractions.

Resting blood pressure prehypertension

Prehypertension

Condition that means the person is likely to develop high blood pressure in RBI’s future. In this condition the blood pressure is between 120/80 mm Hg and 139/89 mm Hg.

Hypertension

High blood pressure. BP readings are greater then 140 mm Hg systolic and 90 mm Hg diastolic.

Hypotension

Low blood pressure. BP readings are less then 100 mm Hg systolic and 60 mm Hg diastolic.

Orthostatic hypotension

Also called postural hypotension. Occurs when the blood pressure drops suddenly when changing position from sitting to standing, lying down to sitting etc. Causes person to feel dizzy or light headed. It is common cause of falls in long term care facilities especially at night.

Is the measure of the force of the blood against the walls of the arteries. BP depends on the: volume (amount of blood in circulatory system), force of the heartbeat, condition of the arteries, distance from the heart.
