Area
the measure, in square units, of the region enclosed by a two-dimensional shape
Axis (plural: axes)
a number line on a graph
Bar Graph
a graph that uses bar lengths to represent numerical data
Circle Graph
a graph that uses a circle divided into sections to represent all the parts of a whole
Circumference
the distance around a circle
Congruent Polygons
polygons with the same size and shape; congruent polygons have thier corresponding sides congruent and their corresponding angles congruent
Coordinate plane
a two-dimensional grid with two perpendicular axes, the x-axis and the y-axis
Decimal
a number with one or more digits to the right of a decimal point that represent tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on
Edge
the line segments fromed by the intersection ot two faces of a solid figure
Equation
a number sentence with an equal sign
Equiangular Polygon
a polygon whose angles have the same measure
Equilateral Polygon
a polygon whose sides all have the same length
Exponent
a number that tells how many times to use a number as a factor
Expression
a collection of numbers and variables connected by a noperation or operations
Face
a flat surface of a three-dimensional figure
Formula
an equation that shows the relationship between two or more variables
Fraction
a number that names parts of a whole or part of a set of objects
Independent Event
an event whose outcomes are not affected by the outcomes of another event
Integer
any of the set of positive whole numbers (1,2,3,...), their opposites (-1, -2, -3, ...) and 0
Irregular Polygon
any polygon that is not both equilateral and equiangular
Line Graph
a graph that uses a broken line to show grends in data or changes in data over time
Mean
the sum of a set of numbers divided by the number of items in the set
Median
the middle number when a set of numbers is numerically ordered; if there are two middle numbers, the median is the mean of the two middle numbers
Mode
the number that appears most often in a set of data; a set of data may have no mode, one mode, or more than one mode
Net
a two-dimensional figure that can be folded to form a three-dimensional figure
Ordered Pair
a pair of numbers, usually in the form (X,Y) that can be graphed as a point on a coordinate plane
Origin
the point on a coordinate plane where the x- and y-axes meet. The ordered pair that describes the origin is (0,0).
Percent
a ratio of a number to 100
Perimeter
the sum of the lengths of the sides of a polygon, or the distance around a figure
Permutations
the various ways in which a set of objects can be arranged
Polygon
a closed two-dimensional figure made up of line segments that meet at their end points
Probability
the likelihood that an event will occur, determined by the raio (number of favorable outcomes) / (total number of possible outcomes)
Proportion
an equation stating that two ratios are equal
Radius
a line segment that has one endpoint at the center of a circle and the other endpoint on the circle. The radius of a circle has one half the length of a diameter of that circle.
Range
the difference between the maximum and minimum values in a data set
Ratio
a comparison of two numbers
Rational Number
any number that can be expressed as the ratio of two integers with zero excluded as the second term in the ratio; rational numbers can be expressed as terminating or repeating decimals
Reflection
a transformation that flips a figure often over the x-axis or y-axis
Regular Polygon
a polygon that is both equilateral and equiangular
Rotation
a transformation that turns a figure around a point
Rotation
a transformation that turns a figure around a point
Scientific Notation
a number written as the product of a number greater than or equal to one and less than 10, and a poswer of 10
Similar Polygons
polygons with the same shape but not necessarily the same size; similar polygons have corresonding angles congruent and corresponding sides lengths in proportion
Stem-and-leaf Plot
a display that shows how data are distributed, using the last digits in numbers as leaves and the first digit(s) as stems
Transformation
a change in a figure's position and sometimes its size; examples of transformations are reflections, rotations, and translations
Translation
a transformation that slides a figure in a plane
Variable
a letter that stands for a number in an expression or in an equation
Venn Diagram
a diagram that uses circles or ovals to show how sets are related
Vertex
the point where three or more edges meet on a prism or pyramid
Volume
the measure, in cubic units, of the space enclosed by a solid figure
X-axis
the horizontal number line on a coordinate plane
Y-axis
the vertical number line on a coordinate plane
X-coordinate
the first number in an ordered pair

break down into components or essential parts
Explain
to write at least 5 sentences giving a detailed description of each of the steps performed while working toward solving the problem; an explanation of why your answer is correct using the mathematical rules, theories, or postulates which support your answer
