What causes type 1 Diabetes? |

Lichen Planus and Cancer |
Give accurate information - cancer developing in oral lichen planus is rare. If any new oral lesions develop or existing lesions are worsening (in symptoms or appearances) then the patient should seek early professional advice. 2% of erosive lesions turn into cancer in 15yrs. |

Bisphosphonate therapy treatment of osteolytic bone disease e.g. osteoporosis – Usually ORAL Recently a relationship between bisphosphonate therapy and osteonecrotic lesions in the jaws has been demonstrated. Extractions almost always precede development of an osteolytic lesion. Patients with this condition develop exposed bone in the jaw. The overlying tooth often is lost and a non- healing, often-painful lesion remains. If at all possible, extraction of teeth should be avoided If extractions, or other procedures, which may disrupt the mucosal covering of bone are unavoidable, the surgery must be ‘covered’ with a short course of an antibiotic such as amoxicillin, penicillin V or erythromycin. Patients should not have ANY dental procedures in the 24h following an IV infusion of a bisphosphonate If a patient experiences slow healing of a site following dental extraction they should be referred to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon for diagnosis and management |
