Whiy is restraint of dogs and cats important?
1.control animal for exam or procedure, diagnostic, drawing blood, bathing.
2. prevent animal from hurting itself during venipuncture
3. Keep personnel protected.
how much restraint does a cat need? Type of restraint for cat.
Type of restraint for a dog.
little restraint is best with cats. a cage is the best restraint of cat in a clinic.
for a dog, a leash is best to control the dog unless he attacks another.
A cat and dogs senses:
1.sense of smell: well developed in all animals
2.sense of hearing: well developed : high pitch noises annoy them.
3.sense of vision: dogs is not so good and they depend on other senses. cats vision is excellent especially night vision.
sense of touch: animals require a certain touch, light or hard to reassure and calm them
Aggressive dog factors:
1. irritabilitiy/ pain= can be from manipulating injured part, or from boredom.
2.maternal=mother protecting litter
3.predatory=kill instinct,hunting and killing prey.
4. territorial=protecting territory *taking animals to vet takes them out of their territory and are easier to handle.*
5.fear induced: wet onself and bite out of fear:fight or flight.(can't manhandle a fear biter)
6. stud animals= 2 intact males fight. esp. if a female is near.
-animals may get aggressive if client is near.
Reading body language:
happy:
fear:
aggressive:
1. happy: sniff hand, wag tail
2. fear: tail between legs, ears back
3. aggressive: teeth may or may not be showing. growling, slow wag, ears back, may lunge, hair on back stands up.
*A very Aggressive dog will not look away when you look it in the eyes,*
Getting the aggressive dog out of the cage
1. keep all doors, windows closed or held as closed as much as possible.
2. use a leather gloves or a towel to catch smaller dogs
3. large dogs: use a catch pole, leash or hog snare.
4. for the very aggressive large dog (police dog) 1 catch pole sometimes 2. Usually muzzled when brought in by owner because they only respond to owner(police dogs)
a capture gun, syringe pole is used by animal control to catch animals, not so much by shelter.
lifting dogs (smaller dogs)

(larger dogs)
1. always let owners know what you are doing:
2.hold dogs back to prevent back injuries and cuff hand up around front legs to head.

Protect back. large dogs can be worked on florr level. Never let any dog jump off the table.
Lifting injured dog:
1.going to muzzle, may use 2 people to lift dog. explain to owner purpose of muzzle.
seriously injured dogs, need to be lifted with a stretcher.
Neck restraint for exxam on table.
hold dog around neck .
better table restraint to reduce biting incident:
Turn head into crook of arm to prevent biting. Dogs head should be placed in crook of arm, other arm holds directly under abdomen, right after back legs.
restraint for venipuncture:
cephalic venipuncture
jugular venipuncture
saphenous venipuncture
1.NO movement: prevents needle tear, blow out of vein. (chemo. must be in vein bc. it is cytotoxic and will kill any cells, causes sloughing of cells in that area.)
2. Get supplies together first.
3. alleviate anxiety with words, petting etc.
4. piercing the skin is most problematic, when the dog will most likely jump
Cephalic venipuncture:
Hold dogs neck with one hand keeping dogs head close to body and away from face. Other hand goes over the top of the body and holds out fore leg for vet.

1. roll vein up on top
2. move head out of way.
Jugular venipuncture:
table
floor
for large amounts of blood like heartworm test, glucose.

Hold head back with one hand and hold both feet with other hand while dogs legs are protruding forward, downward off the table.

Stand over dog, and hold him with both legs on either side of his body, use both hands to hold around his mouth and hold head back.
Saphenous venipuncture
upper leg, restricted back aka femoral vein.
saphenous vein in dog
in dog, lateral saphenous vein moves and rolls alot. used for small samples of blood.
(butterfly catheter for lots of blood tests, or chemo. because it's out of the way.
Muzzles and mouth gags:
homemade muzzle
1.Dogs can pinch bite with a muzzle on.
2. a homemade muzzle can be made out of gauze wrapped around dogs mouth and tied in a bow behind head to make it easy to get off because the dog will mayne want tobite when it is taken off.
Mouth gag
used for oral exam, dental, insertion of stomach tube, mouth inspection
Issues unique to the capture and restraint of cats:
1. Grab by scruff/ hold bottom for heavy cats to prevent nerve damage in neck (short distance)
2.cage captur technique: use a towel: squeeze them inside(for cleaning cage, force cat in another box.
3. ketamine oral spray: when cat hisses you spray and it immobilizes the cat.
4.capture in the cage.
5.with an anesthesia induction box and subsequent sedation, rubber maid box with holes in it, put anesthesia tube in through hole and it relaxes them, but watch out for underlying possible cardiac problems. ALWAYS ask permission from owner.
holding cat down on table for exam
Hold scruff and push down on back
Restraint for exam in cats.
less restraint is sometimes better, allow supervised movement.
Restraint for venipuncture
2
1. towel wrap, wrap cat up like a burrito in a towel, for cephalic vein, can use a sleeve of a sweatshirt.
2. cat bag, zippers, can unzip areas.
Drawing cephalic vein in cats.
Hold cats head back, and hold front paw forward. cats hate cephalic vein.
Jugular vein in cats.
Hold cats head back and legs together with other hand, legs hanging off table.
2. blow in cats face, tap on head, or under jaw for distraction.
Lateral recumbancy restraint.
Lay cat on side, hold front legs with one hand and back legs with other hand.
Mobility limiting device:
E- collar= prevents self mutilation
chemical restraint
helps you and animal not get hurt. Got to tell owner what youa re going to do though and get permission.
