Actions & Indications:
* Expels summerheat and damp-heat: used in early
stages of summerheat or fever. Also effective
at reducing joint pain, slight sweating,
and a heavy sensation throughout the body from
the accumulation of dampness.

C&C:
Some traditional sources advise not to use
this herb with Radix Gentianae Longdancao (long dan cao).

Dou Juan
Channels:

Properties:
Sweet, Cold

Mnemonic:
Eet old Bad TuCk

Actions:
* Clear summerheat & generates fluids: used for summer
heat patterns, especially those with significant thirst,
dry heaves, and dark, scanty urination.

* Promote urination and expel jaundice: recently used
as an adjunct in the treatment of icteric hepatitis

C&C:
Caution in cases of damp-cold and cold from
deficiency of the spleen and stomach.

Dosage:
15-30g.
Xi Gua
Channels:
HT, LIV, SP

Properties:
Bitter, Slightly Sweet, Neutral

Mnemonic:
BEN SLiT

Actions:
* Relieves summerheat: for excessive sweating,
fever, and irritability due to summer heat.

* Raise & Clear Spleen Yang: especially effective
in treating diarrhea due to summerheat, spleen deficiency,
or in recovering from summerheat.

* Stops bleeding: for bleeding in the lower jiao
from heat or stagnation, and for vomiting blood.

C&C:
Caution when bleeding is due to cold from deficiency.
This herb may counteract Sclerotium Poriae Cocos (fu ling).

Dosage:
9-15g
up to 30g if used alone or in a small formula.
Used fresh to stop bleeding as a compress or wash
He Ye

Properties:
Sweet, Cool

Mnemonic:
Eet cool TuCk

Actions & Indications:
* Clears summerheat: especially when thirst
is an important symptom.
Often taken as a tea to avoid the occurence of summerheat.

* Antidote:for Radix Lateralis Aconiti Carmichaeli
Praeparata (fu zi) and fava beans.

C&C:
Do not use in cases of cold from deficiency
of the spleen and stomach with diarrhea.

Dosage:
15-30g. Cook with Radix Glycyrrhizae (gan cao)
as an antidote to Radix Lateralis Aconiti
Carmichaeli Praeparata (fu zi) poisoning,
using 120g of lu dou to 60g of gan cao
