Define species. |
Able to breed fertile offspring.
Similar phenotype and behavioural characteristics. |
|
What is taxonomy? |
Groups animals together based in evolutionary line of descent. |
|
Why is it difficult to define a species? |
They aren't fixed (evolve)
Some species are sterile
Geographically separated animals may not have chance to breed |
|
What are the 2 different ways of comparing DNA? |
DNA sequencing
DNA hybridisation |
|
What is DNA sequencing? |
Closely related species have a higher % of similar base order
Overtime there will be a greater difference in order |
|
What is DNA hybridisation? |
DNA from separate species are heated causing strands to separate then mix with strand of other species. Hybridisation is forming of H bonds. Higher temperature to separate means they're more closely related. |
|
What is an immunological comparison? |
Antibodies will only respond to specific antigens. More proteins that bind mean more precipitate so they're more closely related. |
|
Importance of courtship behaviour? |
Allows animal to recognise members of their own species
Sexual maturation
Takes place when there is a high probability of fertilisation. |
|
What is the importance of biodiversity? |
🔸 aesthetically pleasing 🔸 research opportunities 🔸 boost local economy (tourism) 🔸 medical possibilities |
|
What is species richness? |
Number of different species present in a specific habitats. |
|
What is species richness? |
Number of different species present in a specific habitats. |
|
What is species evenness? |
Number of each species present in habitat.
Measure of species abundance. |
|
How does agriculture reduce diversity? |
PESTICIDES: Kills pests and those feeding off of it HERBICIDES: Kills those who feed off weeds CLEARANCE: Increases farmland which destroys habitats MONOCULTURE: Only 1 type of plant thus few species supported |
|
What is a hierarchy? |
Group within groups.
No overlaps. |
|
What is a phylogenetic group? |
Organisms grouped based on evolutionary links. |
