What are the names of the 6 homicide courts in Classical Athens?

The Areopagos, The Palladion, The Delphinion, the Phreatto, The Prytaneion and The court of the Eleven.

Why is homicide treated differently to other crimes?

Explanation can probably be found in the religious dimension of homicide: the pollution of the killer, which - if he went unpunished – might affect the community as a whole.

What are the four types of homicide courts according to Aristotle, in 'Politics'?

(i) deliberate slaying

(ii) unintentional slaying

(iii) cases where the offence is admitted but justification is claimed

(iv) cases where the charge is brought against persons exiled for murder, with a view to their return.

What were the implications of pollution (miasma) and the community as a whole?
1) his standing in the community prior to the hearing of his case

2) the court-proceeding themselves

3) the importance of homicide cases for the community as a whole.

What was the protocol after the violent death of a person?

After the violent death of a person, his relatives had to proclaim the killer's name in the market-place. From that point onwards, the killer could not enter theAgora or the temples. People would presumably also be averse to associating with him on a personal level, until he had cleared himself in court.

Describe the nature of homicide trials and what made them different from regular court proceedings.

The trials were conducted in an even more formal way than ordinary trials in the People's Court. The parties and their witnesses would have to swear oaths. Normally, witnesses were not on oath. There were three preliminary hearings prior to a suit for homicide, one every month for three months. These were conducted by the Archon Basileus. As for the trials themselves, they were conducted in the open air, as the judges could not risk sharing the same roof as a potential killer.
