The laws that defined the status of slaves during the 16-1800’s.

Casualty

Injury, death, or capture during wartime.

Cotton Gin

A machine for separating the fibers of cotton from the seeds.

Frederick Douglass

An African American social reformer, orator, abolitionist, writer, and statesman.

Abolitionist

A person who wanted complete removal of slavery from the US.

Harriet Tubman

An African American woman who led the Underground Railroad; she was called “Moses” by some.

William Lloyd Garrison

He was an abolitionist that promoted immediate emancipation of slaves.

Blockade

The closing off of a port, city, or harbor by enemy ships to prevent entrance or exit.

Sectionalism

Excessive love of the state, local spirit, etc.

Fugitive

A slave that has run away from it’s master, so as to find a new life in Canada.

Secession

The withdrawal from the Union of 11 Southern states from 1860-61, which was a contributing factor to the Civil War.

Missouri Compromise

A federal statute in the United States that regulated slavery in the country’s western territories.

States Rights

The rights of states to not follow all the laws passed by congress.

Underground Railroad

A system for helping fugitive slaves to escape into Canada, or the West.

Popular Sovereignty

The doctrine of slaveowners that the people of a territory should be free of federal interference.

Border Ruffians

Pro-slavery activists from Missouri who crossed the border into Kansas Territory, to force slavery there.

Rebel

The name for a southern pro-slavery activist (soldier) who fought in the southern army during the Civil War.

Yankee

The name for a northern soldier in the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War.

Emancipate

To free a slave from bondage.

Ironclad

A wooden warship that had iron or steel armor plating.
