How did the civil war end? Lincolns Death?
General Robert E. Lee surrenders the Southern confederate army to the North at the Apomattox Court House in Virginia. One week later President Lincoln was assassinated in a group of conspirers to kill the Northern Power.
Why was Lincoln's death a loss to the country?
Lincoln was the face of the new country rid of slavery and when he was killed, hopeful northerners lost faith that the war was really over.

Andrew Johnson was the 17th president who took over from VP position when Lincoln died. He proved not to be a friend to the Freemen (former slaves) when he took away their newly given land on islands in Georgia and in his era of presidency blacks were targeted across the nation and racial hate crimes were everywhere
What Problems faced the country after the Civil War in the South?
Farms, towns and cities destroyed, no crops, no working currency, no transportation (railroads), no infrastructure of any kind (roads, brigdes etc). No gov. no political leaders in congress representing the south, racism, poverty, healthcare, etc.
What was going on in the North?
Economy booming, new markets, expanding factory use, new industries, new and bigger buildings, many railroads, brigdes, roads, etc. Telegraph lines were starting to be seen everywhere, stronger state gov. being formed, shelter for AA facing racism, etc.
How should the South be built?
South should be starting to use more factory systems and updating their farming tequniques, there should be repairs on homes, buildings, roads, telegraph wires, etc. New gov. should be put into play immediately, and the state gov. should be run by northerners until the South can be trusted again.
How Should New State gov. be formed?
I believe that northern politicians should be running the south until the problems are fixed, and the countries "wounds are healed." Also this could help with trust problems such as starting slavery again secretly.
How should the Southern States be readmitted into the Union?
They should have to have very enforced local gov. that makes sure that the south has a speedy recovery.
How should former slaves should make the transition to freedom?
The government should make new taxes coming out of all people who had once had slaves, and that money should be given to the freedmen so they can give shelter to their families and feed them.
What rights should Freedmen have?
Freedmen should have the same rights as Whites and should not be discriminated against by their skin color.
40 Acres and a Mule?
Before Lincoln's death General Sherman promised a small chain of islands off the coast of Georgia that had been obtained during the war to former slaves as places to live. Each family would get 40 acres and a mule. When Johnson became President the land was taken away from them and they had no home.
