complaint
a formal notice that a lawsuit is being brought.
summons
a notice directing someone to appear in court to ansewer a complaint or a charge.
discovery
Before trial, the lawyers on each side have an opportunity to check facts and to gather evidence by questioning the other party and possible witnesses.
