Primaries

used in elections when there is more than one candidate running in his/her party for same office. Is a direct primary- voters select their choice...may be either closed or open...closed- only those registered to vote by party choice can vote(Florida is closed), or open- anyone registered voter can vote, but can only vote for one parties candidates...both begin in January of election year, last until May/June...primaries tell candidates who has the most support of the electorate, one by one lesser candidates will drop out

Qualifications

must be at least 18 years old, U.S. citizen, resident of State...residency- usually 30 days living in that State.

How do we express public opinion?

1. getting involved in gov't., 2. join support groups that share a common interest, 3. donating to campaigns of nominees that share the same opinions, and 4. by voting

how do we form public opinion?

1. values/attitudes of our family members, 2. school- peer group pressure, classes we take, influential teachers/leaders, 3. work- often times those with whom we work may influence our opinion, 4. age, 5. race, 6. gender, and religion

Exit polling

after one votes, pollsters present to ask you how you voted and why, to predict possible outcome of elections, today is not done until polls are closed/voting is finished.
