What is the definition of civics?
The study of the duties and rights of citizenship.
What is the purpose of the civics course?
To make better citizens, to learn about your rights and responsibilities, and to learn about Canadian Government and Politics.
What are the 4 leadership/decision making styles?
Autocratic, democratic, consensual, and laissez-faire.
Describe an autocratic style of leadership. Name the advantages and disadvantages.
The leader makes their own decision while ignoring the advice/experiences of the group.

Advantage - Decisions are made quickly.
Disadvantage - Other members of the group may have useful knowledge and/or experiences that are ignored.

An authoritarian government is one where the government makes all of the decisions for the people.
What is a participatory government?
A participatory government is where the people are involved by selecting their representatives who then can make decisions for the people.
What are the 8 principles of democracy?
Majority Rule, Common Good, Rule of Law, Fundamental Rights and Freedoms, Human Dignity and Respect, Responsibility, Stewardship, and Participation.
What is Majority Rule?
It is the principle that the will of the majority should prevail.
What is Common Good?
It is the principle that democratic citizens should work toward making everyone safe, secure, and happy.
What is Rule of Law?
The principle that all laws apply to everyone regardless of position.
What is Fundamental Rights and Freedoms?
The principle that all citizens have certain rights and freedoms like the freedom to vote, run for office, and speak.
What is Human Dignity and Respect?
The principle that all citizens should be respected regardless of differences.
What is Responsibility?
The principal that all citizens must take responsibility for their rights and not to abuse them.
What is Stewardship?
The principle that decisions made today have an impact on the long term and to keep that in mind.
What is Participation?
The principle that citizens must participate in the democracy, usually by voting.
