National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
requires federal agencies to integrate environmental values into their decision making processes by considering the environmental impacts of their proposed actions and reasonable alternatives to those actions
sustainable development
development that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
Berkeley FIRST Program:
Residential and commercial property owners in Berkeley can finance new solar photovoltaic systems using the FIRST program in conjunction with the CSI rebate program. BerkeleyFIRST allows property owners to repay the cost of the solar system through a voluntary tax increment on their property tax bill
greenhouse gas emissions
Greenhouse gases are gases in an atmosphere that absorb and emit radiation within the thermal infrared range. This process is the fundamental cause of the greenhouse effect.
vehicle miles traveled
number of miles that residential vehicles are driven. allows analysts to answer are minivans driven more than passenger cars? at what ages do people drive the most? etc. Its important because it allows them to estimate on road vehicle fuel consumption, economy, and expenditures, all of which have important implications for US energy policy and national security.

* The total number of miles driven by a vehicle within a given time period and geographic area
* Used for planning purposes (land use, transportation, infrastructure needs, vehicle use increases)
* Influenced by factors such as: population, age distribution, number of vehicles per household
density
.

* The measurement of population per unit of land area

* Pros- reduce sprawl and its externalities, reduce trip distances, reduce carbon footprint, reduce GHG emissions, open space preservation, reduce dependency in the auto and reduce its pollution and emissions

* Cons- traffic congestion, crowded
energy efficiency
using less energy to provide the same level of energy service. EX, using skylights instead of incandescent lights to attain same level of light. energy efficient buildings, and transportation could reduce the worlds energy needs in the future (2050) by close to 1/3 and help with controlling global emissions of greenhouse gases
behavior vs. technological change
Behavior would be to carpool, get rained to help the environment. Technology would be to get solar panels. Its important because It gives planners an idea of which one they need to work with with whatever problem they have.
East Bay Green Corridor Partnership:
The Mayors of the East Bay cities of Berkeley, Oakland, Richmond, and Emeryville have come together with the Chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley and the Director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to state their strong commitment to strengthening the regional economy through support for emerging green and sustainable industries, alternative energy research, and a healthy built environment.

Increase regional cooperation will be essential to actualize our potential as a center of the emerging green economy. Markets in labor, land, and venture capital are larger than any single jurisdiction. Each of these entities is committed to bringing its unique strengths to the table and building the heart of the East Bay into a dynamic “Green Corridor”.
National Trust for Historic Preservation
a non-profit membership organization that brings people together to protect, enhance, and enjoy the places that matter, helping to revitalize neighborhoods and communities, spark economic development, and promote environmental sustainability.

They advocate the preservation of historic buildings as a staple in sustainability and sustainable development, because of the energy required to construct new buildings, the waste produced by tearing down old buildings, and the emissions produced by massive building projects.
