Atrium/Atria
The upper two chambers of the heart. Blood enters through the atrium and is pushed to the ventricles.
Ventricles
The lower two chambers of the heart. Blood is pushed out of the ventricles where it leaves the heart.
Artery
A blood vessel that takes blood away from the heart. Blood pressure is high in arteries because it is near the pumping action of the heart. The walls of arteries are thick to withstand the high pressure.
Capillaries
Tiny blood vessels that deliver oxygen, water, food and more to individual cells and take away waste materials like carbon dioxide. They are the smallest vessels in the circulatory system.
Vein
A vessel that brings blood towards the heart. The pressure is a lot lower in veins than arteries; To keep blood from flowing the wrong way vein need one way valves.
Systematic Circulation
The network of vessels that carry blood from heart to body and back. ex. your arms
Coronary Circulation
Network of veins and arteries that supply blood to heart cells. Some vessels can be seen on the outside of the heart.
Pulmonary Circulation
The network of vessels that carry blood to and from the lungs. The blood is supplied oxygen and disposes of carbon dioxide preparing it for another trip through the body.
Atherosclerosis
The build up of fatty materials in the walls of your arteries. It interferes with blood flow causing blockage if it breaks free of the vessel walls. This can cause a stroke, when not enough oxygen reaches the brain, or a heart attack, when not enough oxygen is supplied to the heart.
