AROMA/ FLAVOR: Dark Milds sometimes have a tannin-like dryness and include toasty, caramel, chocolatey, and even slightly toasty malt flavors. Minimal hopping means that Dark Mild is generally many balanced.




HISTORY: Historically, Mild was a general name for fresh, unnamed beer.

ENGLISH PORTER

AROMA/ FLAVOR: Made without black malt, English Porter is toasty and nutty with some caramel notes, little to no hop flavor, and a balance ranging from slightly malty to slightly bitter.




HISTORY: Modern English Porter is the present-day descendant of the original, pre-roasting drum porters, and is sometimes referred to as Brown Porter.

FOREIGN EXTRA STOUT

AROMA/ FLAVOR: In terms of alcoholic strength, Foreign Extra Stout falls between Irish Stout and Imperial Stout. The flavor is dominated by notes of roasted grain, chocolate, and coffee.




HISTORY: Aslo sometimes known as "double stout," or simply "foreign stout."

AROMA/ FLAVOR: Sweet with malt flavors of caramel, toffee, treacle, or molasses, as well as fruity esters. Oxidation flavors such as sherry or port may exist, as well as other flavors from lactic acid bacteria and Brettanomyces.




HISTORY: Tradiionally aged at the brewery as a stock ale, much like early batted porters.

ENGLISH BARLEYWINE

AROMA/ FLAVOR: Intense flavors of biscuit, toast, caramel, and molasses and sometimes dark or dried fruit. Earthy or herbal English hop flavor and aroma may be present.




HISTORY: Barleywine sits atop the "ladder" of English pale ales, following a similar formulation to English IPA and bitter, but with increased ABV and intensity.

HISTORY: GETS ITS COLOR FROM ADDITION OF A SMALL AMOUNT OF ROASTED BARLEY.

HISTORY: CLOSE RELATIVE OF MARZEN, MADE WITH 100% VIENNA MALT RATHER THAN MUNICH MALT.
