doctrine of real spiritual presence of Christ in the Supper
proposed by Calvin in opposition to Luther whose view on the Lord's supper he felt was too carnal, and Zwingli's who trivialized it too much. Doctrine of real spiritual presence stated that the things signified in the sacrements were really present but not in a physical way, in a spiritual way. The supper does not provide physical nourishment, but spiritual nourishment.
