English Protestant Reformation

Henry VIII broke away from the Catholic Church to start his own, creating the protestants and a seesaw of power between the two.

Roanoke

150 colonists were lead by Captain John White to settle in America. They all seemed to dissapear in 1590, giving them the name "The Lost Colony."
Spanish Armada
King Phillip II's naval fleet that attempted to invade England. They were defeated by the English and it cost Spain a fortune.

Primogeniture

Where the eldest son inherits everything from the father and the other children must find their way elsewhere. This started younger sons seeking fortune in america.
Joint-Stock Company
A company which individuals who own stock pool their resources for business ventures; these funded almost all of the original colonization attempts.
Virginia Company
The Virginia Company was a joint-stock company that received a charter from King James I
Charter
A document granting the right to colonize, and guaranteeing their rights as English citizens.
Jamestown
Jamestown was the first permanent settlement conducted by the English. Funded by the Virginia company, three ships were carrying 105 colonists, landing in 1607.
First Anglo-Powhatan War
declared by Lord De La Warr when he took over Jamestown; marriage of Pocahontas and John Rolfe ended this war in 1614.
Second Anglo-Powhatan war
Indians last effort to dislodge Virginians, they were defeated. Peace treaty of 1646 stopped any hope of creating native peoples into Virginia society or peace with coexisting.
House of Burgesses
The first legislature in the English colonies. Once a year, the House met to set up laws that could be vetoed by the governor or the Virginia company. The members consisted of 22 men over 17 that owned land. They could make laws under the watchful eye of the English Monarchy.
Act of Toleration
A legal document that allowed all Christian religions in Maryland.
Barbados Slave code
The system of laws for Slave labor, first developed in barbados and later adopted by South Carolina in 1696.
Squatter
Settler on land without a legal title or right; most early settlers in North Carolina were these.
Iroquois Confederacy
The alliance of five northeastern Native American tries that developed a council of representatives to deal with the oncoming settlers.
Tuscatora War
A battle between native americans and the North carolinans, where the natives were defeated and the tribe sent to seek assistance from the Iroquois Confederacy.
Yamasee Indians
Another coastal indian tribe that tried to dislodge North Carolina. they were defeated as well.

A shield, like Georgia was to the england colony, to guard them from the Spaniards in florida.

The King of England; he broke away from the Catholic Church so he could have six wives.

A protestant queen who strongly supported the colonization of America.
Sir Francis Drake
A "sea dog" a pirate who works for the government, he helped defeat the spanish armada.
Sir Walter Raleigh
Raleigh was a knighted Englishman who attempted to colonize North Carolina. He also sent out the Roanoke expedition.
James I
The King of England as which Jamestown was named after, desperately tried to hold Virginia under his control.
Captain John Smith
The "savior" of Virginia, he was saved by Pocahontas, which led to Powhatan granting him territory and protection.
Powhatan
Powhatan was a Native American tribe in the Virginia area, which granted John Smith his safety.
Pocahontas
The daughter of the tribe leader of the Powhatan, saved John Smith from execution.
Lord De La Warr
An english governor of Virginia, he imposed a military regime on Jamestown and declared war against the Powhatan.
John Rolfe
A colonist of Virginia, he ended the First Anglo-Powhatan war by marrying a native girl.
Lord Baltimore
Founded the colony of Maryland; he granted religious freedom to all Christian colonists who chose to live there.
Oliver Cromwell
An englishman who led the army that overthrew King Charles I, he ruled responsibly, and helped isolate the American Colonies.
James Oglethorpe
Founder of the Georgia colony, he ran a disciplined military regime that banned alcohol, slaves, and Catholocism.
Hiawatha

A founder of the Iroquois Confederacy, helped band the Iroquois tribes together against the Colonists.
