Abram/Abraham
The origination ancestor of Jews and Arabs in Genesis. God called him from his home region of Ur to travel to Canaan, which would become the homeland of his descendents.
Babel
A place where Genesis says the people tried to build a tower to heaven. God responds by multiplying the languages the people speak so they are not able to understand one another. Thus they must abandon the project.
Documentary Hypothesis
theory that holds that the books of the Pentateuch were composed from sources written earlier (J, E, D, and P)
Enuma Elish
A 12th century BCE Babylonian text that gives an account of creation of earth by many Gods.
Epic of Gilgamesh
A document composed around 2000 BCE in Sumerian that includes a story of Gilgamesh building an ark in which he and the animals survive a worldwide flood.
Esau
Isaac’s “firstborn” son, sells his birthright to Jacob for some stew.
Isaac=
Son borne to Abraham through his wife, Sarah
Jacob
Isaac’s second son, came holding Esau’s heel. Tricks Isaac into giving him the birthright, flees back to the land of Abraham to avoid Esau killing him.
Joseph
Jacobs 2nd youngest son, only son born from his favorite wife, Rachael. Gets sold into slavery in Egypt.
Rebekah
The wife of Isaac, favorited Jacob and helps him to trick Isaac into giving him the birthright.
Sarah
originating female ancestor of Jews. She was the wife and half sister of Abraham and mother of Isaac.
Cities of refuge
A city established as a place to which those accused of murder could flee for protection until trial. If found not guilty they could remain under its protection.
Deuteronomistic History-
The telling of the story of the life of the nations of the Israelites from the perspective of the paradigm set out in Deuteronomy (that is, faithfulness brings blessing to the nation and unfaithfulness with bring defeat and disaster). The books of Joshua, Judges, 1&2Samuel, and 1&2Kings are all written from this perspective and are called the deuteronomistic histories.
Exodus
The story of the Israelites escaping slavery in Egypt. This story becomes the foundational story for their understanding of themselves and God.
Mosaic Covenant
Agreement between God and the Israelites that was given to Moses on Mt. Sinai. God agreed to make the Israelites God’s people and the people agreed to make God their only God and to obey God’s other laws.
Shema
The most basic confession within Judaism. It is taken from Deuteronomy 6:4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.”
10 Commandments
The ten most basic instructions given to Moses on Mt. Sinai. These set a basic religious and moral code that serve as an important element of God’s covenant with Israel.
Assyrian Empire
Empire that arose in the 8th century BCE. Its capital was in Ninevah (today’s northern Iraq) captured northern kingdom
Baal
Popular Canaanite god who ranked high in their pantheon. He was also their storm god.
Babylonian Empire
Empire that rises to regional dominance in the 7th/6th centuries BCE. They replaces the Assyrian Empire as the dominant power in the region. Their capital was near today’s Baghdad, Iraq.
David
A shepherd boy whom Samuel anoints as the king of Israel, full of faith and also faults
Elijah
9th century Israelite prophet who performed many miracles and called the people to worship only God. He opposed the reign of Ahab and his dynast because of their unfaithfulness to God. He was alos the head of the “school of prophets.”
Joshua
Successor of Moses who leads the Israelites in the conquest of Caanan
Josiah
king who took the throne of Judah at age eight. A few years later he institutes sweeping reforms destroying all statues of Baal and reinstituting the Passover.
Judges
A book in the Deuteronomistic Histories. Named for the “judges” or 12 people who on different occasions lead the Israelites in revolts against their neighbors
Samuel
Succeeds Eli as the religious and military leader of the tribes.
Saul
- First King of Israel who was eventually rejected by God for disobedience
Solomon
King of Israel after David. He is known for being wise and for building the first temple to God in Jerusalem
