Why is Class K different from Class B?
Newer cooking oils have a higher temperature rating and commercial cookers have a higher insulation value so re-ignition of the grease fire had become a concern.
What is a 1-A extinguisher rated for?
Equivalent to a fire consisting of a wood crib made up of 50 pieces of 5cm x 5cm x 50cm boards is set on fire and allowed to burn for a few minutes. 5L water extinguisher is a 1-A, 10L is 2-A, etc.
What is a 1-B extinguisher rated for?
1 square foot that has an appreciable depth (6mm or greater)
How are Class K extinguishers rated?
They are rated as a minimum of 40-B. In general, they must meet 3 criteria: 1. Completely extinguish the fire in the deep fryer. 2. Prevent re-ignition of the vegetable oil for 20 minutes or reduce the oil temperature at least 15.60C below its auto-ignition temperature. 3. Cause no splashing of flaming oil outside of the fryer.

20A60BC, 10-25 sec, 2-4.5 meters

10BC, 10-30 sec, 1-2.5 meters

When inspecting an extinguisher, what should you check?
1. The appropriate extinguisher is in its designated location. 2. The extinguisher is fully charged 3. Examine for broken witness wire or other signs of previous use 4. Signs of tank corrosion or other physical damage 5. Signs of cracking on hoses or obstructions to nozzles. 6. Date of last hydrostatic test of extinguisher shell. 7. Date of last inspection. (note that all EFRS extinguishers are inspected annually by third party)
