The New Deal
FDR's plan to fix the economy.
Bank Holiday
FDR closed all the banks in the nation for a few days. It was designed to stop massive withdrawals.
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)
An organization the insured each back deposit up to 5,000. Currently it insures some deposit up to 100,000.
Frances Perkins
Veteran Reformer who helped direct FDR's program's. He was a sectary of labor
Harry L. Hopkins
Former relief supervisor in New York who headed FERA.
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)
Provided relief for many unemployed young men between 18 and 25.
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)
Regulates companies which sold stocks and bonds.
John Maynard Keynes
British economist who argued the nation must spend money to encourage investment and consumption.
National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA)
Stimulated the industrial and business activities and reduced unemployment. It was stabilize prices, raise wages, limiting working hours, and providing jobs.
Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA)
Paid farmers to reduce their output of corn, cotton, dairy products, hogs, rice, tobacco, wheat, and other commodities. It came from taxes levied on food processors, including canners, flour millers, and meat packers.
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)
Transformed economic and social life of the region. TVA built new dams, power stations, combated malaria, illiteracy, and soil erosion. Trying to improve the regions low standard of living.
Robert C. Weaver
Ph.D. of economics from Harvard who was brought in to advise the Department of Interior.
Marian Anderson
A famous African-american singer who was not allowed to sing at a (DAR) Washington D.C. Hall. Due to this event Eleanor Roosevelt removed her membership and held a free concert at the Lincoln memorial for Anderson.
John Collier
A social worker who formed the American Indian Defense Association.
Dr. Francis E. Townsend
Liberal reformer who opposed the New Deal. He wanted the gov. to grant pension of $200 a month to all American's over 60. Recipients were to spend the pensions within 30 days pumping money into the economy.
Charles E. Coughlin
Radio priest from Michigan who urged the gov. to nationalize all banks and return to the silver standard.
Huey Long
Corrupt U.S. senator from Louisiana who wanted to take money from the rich and give it to the poor. He came up with the Share-our-Wealth plan

Social Security Act
Provide unemployment insurance to workers who lose their jobs. Provided pensions for workers over 65. Payments to people with disabilities, the elderly, and the wives and children of male workers who have died.
Wagner-Connery Act
Act guaranteed labor's right to organize unions and to bargain collectively for better wages and working conditions.
Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO)
Tried to unite workers in various industries. The new CIO unions included all workers, skilled and unskilled in any given industry.
Sit-down Strike
A strike in which workers occupy the workspace. They do not leave nor do they work.
Dust Bowl
Region where large clouds of dust "attacked" large towns.
