What is the role of the Fire Investigation Branch?
To investigate every fire in the City of Edmonton that results in property damage, and or injury, and or death, to determine the origin, cause and circumstances of the fire.
Where does authority come from to conduct fire investigations?
Provincial legislation (the Alberta Fire Code & the Safety Codes Act)
In order to assist investigators, what are some things to note when en route and upon approaching the scene of the fire?
Climatic conditions, Temperature, Wind direction & speed, Type of precipitation, Obstacles to the scene, Color of smoke, Flame color/intensity, People/vehicles fleeing seen
Upon arrival, what are some things to make note of?
Type of building and it's use, location of building in block, If building is occupied, Vehicle tracks or footprints, Venting of flames, Any occupants or bystanders or witnesses or suspicious persons
During firefighting operations, what are some things to make note of?
How did you enter, Are there obstacles, Did you force entry, Were doors locked, What time did you enter, What was the stage of the fire, Were windows covered to block presence of fire

When are investigators required to attend?
Whenever there has been property damage, Injury, Death due to fire.
When are investigators not required to attend?
When there has only been smoke damage, forced entry by fire crews, but there is no fire damage, accidental sprinkler system activation, damage is confined to electrical equipment, Grass or brush fires, Commercial waste containers or residential garbage bins
Should Incident Commander involve police relating to fire cause or circumstances without first discussing with fire investigators?
