Transcription

Transcription is the first step of gene expression, in which a particular segment of DNA is copied into RNA by the enzyme RNA polymerase

Codon

a sequence of three nucleotides that together form a unit of genetic code in a DNA or RNA molecule.

Translation

The process by which messenger RNA directs the amino acid sequence of a growing polypeptide during protein synthesis.

Central Dogma

central dogma of molecular biology definition. Describes a key assumption of molecular biology, namely, that each gene in the DNA molecule carries the information needed to construct one protein, which, acting as an enzyme, controls one chemical reaction in the cell.

Point Mutation

mutation that causes a single nucleotide base change, insertion, or deletion of the genetic material, DNA or RNA

Chromosomal mutations

A mutation involving a long segment of DNA. These mutations can involve deletions, insertions, or inversions of sections of DNA
