Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) |
a chronic incurable condition where the heart does not beat strongly enough to maintain adequate blood flow to all systems in the body, causing organs to be oxygen deprived and the body to retain fluid. |
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) |
a progressive lung condition that makes it increasingly difficult to breathe. |
Emphysema |
the alveoli walls may become deflated or damaged, which reduces the amount of gas exchange that can occur. can lead to COPD |
Pneumonia |
inflammation of the lung tissue caused by infection, usually from bacterial, viral, or fungal sources. contagious |
Asthma |
airways narrow and clog with mucus |
Heart and Lung connection |
heart and lungs work together to transport oxygen and nutrients to all systems of the body. Conditions impacting one can cause impairments of the other. |
Blood flow through heart |
oxygen poor blood enters the right atrium after circulating the body oxygen rich blood enters the left atrium after leaving the lungs oxygen poor blood continues to right ventricle and goes to lungs to receive oxygen oxygen rich blood from lungs continues to left ventricle and goes out to body |
air flow to lungs |
nasopharanx- oropharynx- larynx-trachea- bronchi- alveoli |
flow to stomach |
oropharynx- larynx- epiglottis-esophagus- stomach |
Signs and symptoms of COPD |
persistent cough that produces large amount of mucus, wheezing, chest tightness, dyspnea with exertion, swelling in the ankles, blue lips and fingernails (cyanosis) caused by long term irritants like smoking , air pollution, chemicals |
Signs and symptoms of CHF |
SOB, difficulty breathing while laying down, weight gain from fluid retention, swelling of the feet and legs, decreased urine output, fatigue, decreased ability to focus, nausea and vomiting |
Signs and symptoms Myocardial Infarction |
chest pain/tightness, indigestion, dizziness, SOB, excessive sweating |
Cardiopulmonary Disease- Precautions |
no heavy lifting hrt rate below 110 no activities at a MET rate higher than 6 oxygen on at all times maintain low salt diet record daily weight follow medication schedule |
Metabolic Equivalent (MET) |
amount of energy required by an activity. Sedentary tasks such as TV and computer- 1.5 to 2 competitive sports require 11 or more |
Differences between CHF and COPD |
COPD- cyanosis, cough producing large amounts of mucus CHF- decreased urine output, decreased concentration, nausea, vomiting |
Case study problem list |
emphysema, trouble breathing, declined activity, reaction to meds, pneumonia, no family help, anxious driving, dog to take care of, SOB going outside, depression, fatigue, lives alone |
Signs and symptoms Pneumonia |
fever, SOB(dyspnea), sweating, chills, chest pain, headache, fatigue |
Coronary Artery Disease-CAD |
atherosclerosis- build up of cholesterol, fat, calcium, and others sticks to arteries of the heart. |
Surgical procedures for CAD |
angioplasty, coronary artery bypass grafting, and carotid endarterectomy |
CHF vs. CAD |
issue with pump or arteries |
Symptoms for cardiopulmonary patients |
dyspnea fatigue depression difficulty focusing anxiety light headedness |
blood flow through heart |
Deoxygenated blood Superior & inferior vena cava- right atrium- right ventricle- pulmonary arteries-lungs- Oxygenated blood Pulmonary veins-left atrium- left ventricle- aorta/aortic arch- carotid to brain |
Sternal precautions |
no lifting no bending no hands behind back no ROM greater than 90 |
