Foundation Myth

A high prized pottery modified by the Koreans during the Koryo Dynasty by changing the color to a grayish green and cutting designs into the pots.

Hangul
The Korean writing system composed of 28 characters devoloped in the 1400's by scholars of King Sejong after years of using the thousands of characters of the Chinese system.

Demilitariized Zone (DMZ)
A 2.5 mile wide area along the 38th parallel between DPRK & ROK where they agreed not to place any soldiers or weapons since 1953.
SIGNIF: represents a physical border between "brother" countries

This policy, by the govt (after war) broke up large estates into smaller family farms. The government provided fertilizer to make land more fertile.

Geogrophy of Korean peninsula
Juts out from southern China between the sea of Japan (East Sea) and the Yellow Sea. Divided into N & S, two very different regeions; N= industrial; S= agricultural. South, more populous & slavery had more importance. Peninsula is 85,000 sq. mi., 600 mi. long.
SIGNIF: Korea is too strategically located, between Japan and China. If there is a war, they are dead!
