Capitalist Roaders
A Maoist concept that denotes people on the political left who bow to pressure from Bourgeois forces and then attempt to pull the revolution in a capitalist direction, eventually restoring capitalism. Deng Xiaoping was a capatilst roader (#2) after Liu Shaoqi.
Second Five-Year Plan
1971-1975. Zhou Enlai enforced this.
Principles: pragmatic management, centralized planning, encouraged material incentives, argues for interdependence of various areas of the government. All of these contradicted Mao and Lin Biaos decentralization and moral and ideological incentives.
Shanghai Communique
1972. Signed by Nixon and Zhou Enlai and it established the basis for improved relations between the 2 countries, by side stepping the Taiwan issue which would be dealt with solely by the Chinese.
This was the first document to articulate that Taiwan is part of China and it also included the wishes to expand economic and cultural context between the 2 nations
Gang of Four/ Shanghai Clique (Group)
Consisted of Jiang Qing and 3 others. Power base in Shanghai was the bastion for red agitation against a pragmatist line. They tried to usurp power for themselves.
Hua Guofeng
1921-. Was put into the position of acting premier after Zhou Enlai died. Zhou wanted to put Deng Xiaoping into power.
Tangshan earthquake
1976. Hebei. Was devastate but China refused to accept international aid and it's own efforts were stated as not enough.
