What is the contagious period of chicken pox?
People are contagious about 2 days before the rash appears until all of them scab over
How should you treat chicken pox?
Treat the symptoms (itching!)
- frequent bathes in lukewarm water.. can add some oatmeal or aveeno
- cool compress
- Burrow's solution.. is an astringent
- Calamine is astringent, antipruritic (but can cake)
- only ORAL antihistamines

Fever and pain with acetaminophen or ibuprofen
I have:
- irregular or well-demarcated alopecia and scaling
- occipital adenopathy
- a kerion

Tinea capitis

TX: itraconazole, terbinafine or griseofulvin (ORAL antifungals)

antifungal which inhibits ergosterol synthesis
TAKE WITH FOOD to increase absorption
terbinafine
antifungal..
inhibit ergosterol synthesis

- drug accumulates in nails, skin, fat
griseofulvin
inhibits fungal mitosis

- tightly bound to keratin

- take with food or milk to avoid GI upset
I have a ring shaped scaly lesion on my chest. It is a bit itchy.

Tinea corporis.. aka ringworm.

Topical antifungals such as clotrimazole, miconazole, ketoconazole.. etc

Treat for min 2-3 weeks and at least 1 week after it's gone
I have an itchy, scaly rash around my crotch.. I play a lot of sports and I never change my towels.

How to treat it?
tinea cruris.. jock itch.

- dry feet last.. change your towels
- decrease occlusion and moisture
- use topical antifungals min 3wk tx
How long should athlete's foot be treated for?
minimum of 4 weeks and for 2 weeks after it clears

- topical tx not effective if toenails are involved
tolnaftate
- blocks chol syn in fungal cells
- not for yeast
- otherwise.. works great!!
- well tolerated on both intact and broken skin
ciclopirox olamine 1%
- RX
- interferes with cell membrane syn
- active against yeast
- may be better than azoles for tinea infections
How to treat thrush?
nystatin susp 500 000 units swish and swallow QID for 7-14 days
selenium sulfide 2.5%
used to treat tinea versicolor...
- a shampoo
- apply OD for 14 days
- use once or twice a month to prevent recurrences
