What is chemistry?
The study of the composition and properites of matter
Matter
anything that takes up space and has mass
Mass
The amount of matter in an object (the amount of "stuff" in a given object-measured on a balance...units is grams
Volume
The amount of space occupied by an object
Volume of liquids
measured with a graduated cylinder (units is mL)
Volume of Solids
regular solids are measured with a ruler (l x W x H) (units are cm3)
Volume of irregular solids
measured using the water displacment method (not as flask) (units are mL...also can be dm3 or L)
Relationship between mL and cm3
1 mL = 1 cm3 (only true for water)
Metric System prefixes
Kilo, Hecto, Deca, Basic Unit (meter [lenght] liters [volume] grams [mass], joules [heat/energy]) Deci, Centi, Milli
Precision
the degree of exactness to which a measurement can be reproduced (precision of an instrument limited by smallest divison on scale)
Accuracy
describes how well the result agrees with an accpeted value (ex. hitting the center of a target)
Signigicant Figures
non-zero digits, final zeros after the decimal place, zeros between 2 other signigicant figures
Adding/subtracting Significant Figures
answer should be rounded to correspond to the LEAST number of decimal places in the measurements
Multiplying/dividing Significant Figures
the answer should be rounded to the LEAST number of significant figures in the measurements
