What is the periodic table organised into?

Periods and groups

What does each element have shown on the table?

A chemical symbol and an atomic number

Where are the alkali metals found?

On the left most row of the table (group 1)

Where are the halogens found?

The second most right column (group 7)

Where are the transition metals found?

In the centre of the table (between groups 2 and 3)

Where are the noble gases found?

On the rightmost column (group 0)

What are the 7 diatomic elements?

Hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine

Have no fear of ice cold beer

What particles do atoms contain?

3 different particles; protons, neutrons and electrons

What are the differences between the particles?

Protons: located in the nucleus, relative mass of 1 a.m.u, relative charge of +1

Neutrons: located in nucleus, relative mass of 1 a.m.u, relative charge of 0

Electrons: located orbiting the nucleus, relative mass of 0 a.m.u, relative charge of -1

Think of charge, mass and location.

What does the nucleus contain and where is it found?

The nucleus contains protons and neutrons, it is found in the centre of the atom

Where would you find electrons?

On the shells around the nucleus, orbiting the nucleus.

How do you draw electron arrangement?

The chemical symbol in the centre, and the amount of shells as circles surrounding it. Electrons drawn as crosses on the shells, they are paired up if there are more than 4 electrons.

How would you calculate the number of protons from the atomic number?

No. of protons=atomic number

How would you calculate the number of neutrons from the mass number and the atomic number?

Mass number=number of protons+number of neutrons

Number of neutrons= mass number-atomic number

How would you calculate the number of protons and neutrons from the nuclide notation:

40

K

19

Protons= 19

Neutrons= 21

What elements are present in calcium bromide?

Calcium and bromine (ide suffix means there is only 2 elements present)

What elements are present in copper carbonate?

Copper, carbon and oxygen (ate or ite suffix means 2 elements plus oxygen)

What is the formula for phosphorus iodide?

3 1 <valencies

P I

1 3 <swap the valencies

PI3

Phosphorus valency= 3

Iodine valency= 1

What is the formula for dinitrogen tetroxide?

N2O4

(when there's prefixes, you don't use valency rules)

What are the prefixes for elements with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 atoms?

1- mono

2- di

3- tri

4- tetra

5- penta

6- hexa
