Describe Ionic Bonding

Ionic bonding is when a metal and a non-metal bond to make a compound, the metal looses electrons and the non-metal gains them this creates a positive and negative charge (anions and cations). These ions are attracted together through electrostatic forces that neutralise the opposite ion, creating a compound.

Electro static forces

Describe covalent bonding

Covalent bonds take place between two non-metals and involve the sharing of electrons to achieve a full outer shell. These bonds are extremely strong and are hard to break.
