Early atmosphere

Volcanoes emitted CO2, methane, water vapour, nitrogen, ammonia

Atmosphere was mostly CO2 with virtually no oxygen

Billions of years ago

Changes in early atmosphere

CO2 dissolved in seas and through a series of reactions formed the sea bed

Green plants and algae evolved - absorbed CO2 and emitted O2

Marine animals evolved - skeleton made of carbonated - and then because fossils

Fossilisation

Plants and marine animals die • fall to sea bed and get buried by layers of sediment • compress (heat and pressure) and form sedimentary rocks • therefore trapping carbon within them reducing CO2 in atmosphere

Crude oil & natural gas = plankton

Coal = plant deposits

Limestone = shells and skeletons of marine animals

Current atmospherehu

78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.04% CO2 and very small amount of water vapour and noble gases

Human activity that affect amount of GHGs in atmosphere

Deforestation, Burning fossil fuels, Agriculture, Making waste

Carbon footprint

Measure of the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases released over the full life cycle of something

Really hard to measure tbh

Reducing carbon footprint

Renewable & Nuclear energy • more efficient processes cut out waste • government tax for CO2 emitted • government cap in emissions • carbon capture tech

Hard to make tech that reduces CO2 emissions • governments don’t want to mess up economic growth • international agreements are harddd • individuals don’t want to change life lifestyles

Particulates and Air Pollution

If inhaled, can get stuck in lungs and cause damage

Bad for environment, reflect sunlight back into space, global dimming

From incomplete combustion

Carbon Monoxide and Air Pollution

Odourless, colourless has

Bond to haemoglobin and prevents oxygen from bonding - no oxygen isn’t great ngl

Sulphur Dioxide and Oxides of Nitrogen

SD- releases during combustion of fossils f with sulphur impurities and it becomes oxidised

NO- caused by heat of burning (e.g in cars) nitrogen oxidises

Creates acid rain, kills plants, damaged buildings, metal corrosion, respiratory problems
