physical change
a change that affects the appearance but not the chemical makeup of a substance
chemical change
a change that alters the makeup of the elements or molecules of a substance
phase
one of three forms - solid, liquid, or gas - which every substance is capable of attaining
solution
a mixture of one substance dissolved in another
solute
the substance being dissolved (usually the smaller amount)
solvent
the substance doing the dissolving (usually the larger amount & often a liquid)
diffusion
the random motion of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
concentration
a measurement of how much substance exists within a certain volume
osmosis
the tendency of a solvent to travel across a semipermeable membrane into areas of higher solute concentration
semipermeable membrane
a membrane that allows some molecules to pass through but does not allow other molecules to pass through
chemical reaction
when one or more chemicals react to make one or more new chemicals (BOOM!)
balanced chemical reaction
when the total atoms on the left side of the arrow are the same as the total atoms on the right side of the reaction
reactants
the molecules at the beginning of the reaction (left side of the arrow)
products
the molecules produced as a result of the chemical reaction (right side of the arrow)
photosynthesis
the process by which autotrophic organisms produce their own food
carbon dioxide and water
reactants of photosynthesis
glucose and oxygen
products of photosynthesis
catalyst
a substance that alters the speed of a chemical reaction but does not get used up in the process
chlorophyll
the catalyst of most photosynthetic reactions
