What is Matter?
Anything that occupies space and has mass.
Molecules
Particles of matter that are composed of one or more smaller units called Atoms.
Nucleus
composed of positively charged protons and uncharged neutrons.
Proton
Positively charged particle within the nucleus of an atom.
Neutron
Electrically neutral particle within the nucleus of an atom.
Electron
Small negatively charged sub atomic particle found in the outer regions of an atom.
What 4 kinds of atoms make up about 96% of the human body?
Oxygen, Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen.
What is a covalent bond?
Chemical bond formed by two atoms sharing one or more pairs of electrons.
What is an Ionic Bond?
Chemical bond formed by the positive-negative attraction between two ions.
Two forms of nucleic acid?
Deoxyribonucleic Acid {DNA} & Ribonucleic Acid {RNA}
Name and define 3 kinds of particles within an atom?
subatomic particles..protons, neutrons and electrons.
What is an energy level?
Limited region surrounding the nucleus of an atom at a certain distance containing electrons {SHELL}
What is an electrolyte?
Substance that dissociates into ions in solution, rendering the solution capable of conducting an electric current.
Define organic compound and inorganic compound.
Organic- Compound whose large molecules contain carbon and that include C-C bonds and/or C-H Bonds
Inorganic- Compound whose molecules do not contain C-C or C-H bonds.
Explain the concept of pH.
pH value higher than 7= Basic
Less than 7= Acidic
Equal to 7 is neutral
