What is the Aufbau Principle?
As protons are added one by one to the nucleus to build up the elements, electrons similarly are added to the atomic orbitals. *Electrons enter orbitals of lowest energy first
What is the Pauli Exclusion Principle?
No two electrons in the same atom can have identical values for all four of their quantum numbers
The maximum number of electrons in any orbital is two
When two electrons are in the same orbital, they must have opposite spins
What is Hund's Rule?
When electrons fill orbitals within a sublevel, each orbital is occupied by a single electron before any orbital has two electrons
What are valence electrons? Why are they the most important?
Electrons in the outermost (highest) principle energy level of an atom. They are the most important because they are involved in bonding.
What are the core electrons of an atom?
The inner electrons
What does the term isoelectronic mean?
having the same electrons configuration with another element
