Nonelectrolyte
a substance that is not ionized and does not conduct electric current
Strong Electrolyte
a substance that is essentially completely ionized in aqueous solution, good electrical conductor
Weak Electrolyte
partially ionized in aqueous solution, fair conductor of electricity
Precipitate
occur when certain cations and anions combine to produce and insoluble ionic solid
Spectator Ions
these ions are not reactants, they go through the reaction unchanged
Net Ionic Equation
equation that includes only the actual participants in a reaction, with each participant denoted by the symbol or formula that best represents it
Acid
a substance that provides H ions in aqueous solution
Strong Acid
molecular compounds that are almost completely ionized into H+(aq) and accompanying anions when in aqueous solution
Weak Acid
acids that are incompletely ionized in aqueous solution
Base
a substance that produces hydroxide ions(OH-) in aqueous solution
Strong Base
base that dissociates completely, or very nearly so, in aqueous solution
Weak Base
base that is incompletely ionized in aqueous solution
Neutralization Reaction
an acid and a base react fo form water and an aqueous solution of an ionic compound called a salt
Oxidation-Reduction Reaction(redox)
oxidation and reduction must occur together, OIL RIG
Half-Reaction
redox reactions-half oxidation, half reduction
Disproportionation Reactions
the same substance is both oxidized and reduced
Oxidizing Agent/Oxidant
the substance that makes it possible for some other substance to be oxidized
-element whose oxidation state decreases in redox
-gains electrons
-is reduced
Reducing Agent/Reductant
the substance that causes some other substance to be reduced
-element whose oxidation state increases in redox
-loses electrons
-is oxidized
Titration
reaction carried out by the carefully controlled addition of one solution to another
Equivalence Point
the point where both reactants have reacted completely
Indicators
very small quantity of a substance added to the reaction mixture changes color at or very near the equivalence point
Standardization of a Solution
determines the exact molarity of a solution
