Nonmetals that are chemically bonded are known as what? |
Molecules |
There are two types of molecules. These are? |
Molecules that are Elements Molecules that are compounds |
Molecules that are compound are what? |
They are chemically bonded |
What are the seven molecular elements and what type of molecule are they all? |
Nitrogen, Oxygen, Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine, Hydrogen. They are all diatomic. They make a 7 on the periodic table + Hydrogen. |
What element is considered a nonmetal? |
Hydrogen |
What type of metal are molecular compounds? |
They are always non-metals |
What is a Formula Unit? |
It is usually a metal bonded to a non-metal. An example would be salt or NaCl |
What are the characteristics of a mixture? |
Mixtures have no chemical changes. Each part retains its own characteristics. |
What is a heterogeneous mixture? |
It is a mixture that is different and non-uniform. It can be separated by non-chemical means. An example would be iced tea or a salad or milk. |
What is a homogeneous mixture? |
It is a mixture that is uniform throughout, but it retains its characteristics. |
What is another name for a homogeneous mixture? |
A solution. It is a liquid with two or more components. |
What test can generally prove a liquid is a solution? |
If light passes through it. This only works with liquids. |
When is a mixture generally a pure substance? |
If the composition is not variable. |
What does hydrogen peroxide decompose to? |
It quickly decomposes to water and oxygen. The oxygen kills many forms of bacteria. |
What is chemistry? |
It is the study of the properties and behavior of matter. |
What is matter? |
It is anything that has mass and takes up space. |
Atoms are what? |
The building blocks of matter. |
What makes each element unique? |
They are each made up of a unique atom. |
In an element, all atoms are what? |
Identical |
What is a compound? |
A compound is a chemically bonded pair (or more) of atoms via a chemical reaction. |
What is the only way to separate atoms? |
A chemical reaction is required. |
Molecules of an element consist of what? |
The same kinds of atoms chemically bonded |
How are molecules of a compound formed? |
They are formed when nonmetals form a covalent bond. |
What is a covalent bond? |
It is when two atoms share electrons to make a compound molecule. |
How are Formula Units produced? |
They are produced when ions (usually metal and nonmetal) chemically bond to form compounds. |
What are the three states of matter? |
Solid, Liquid, Gas
