the number of significant figures in the result is the same as that in the LIMITING measurement-- the measurement with the smallest number of significant figures
ex. 4.56 x 1.4 = 6.384 = 6.4 (2 sig figs)
Addition or Subtraction
the limiting term is the one with the smallest number of decimal places. The result cannot have more digits to the right of the decimal point than any of the original numbers.
ex. 12.11 + 18.0 + 1.013 = 31.123 = 31.1
