Scene 1 Summary

- Roderigo is in love with Desdemona so pays Iago to give her gifts in the hope that she will fall in love with him.


- Desdemona eloped with Othello in the night.


- Iago hates Othello for promoting Cassio to lieutenant and not him.


- Iago pursuades Roderigo to wake Brabantio and tell him Othello has run off with Desdemona.

Scene 1 Analysis

- Referring to Othello as "the moor" shows hatred and lack of respect for him.


- He is shown in a negative light tainting our perception of him.


-When we hear the reason for their hatred we pity Othello as it is not his fault.


- We hear Iago's motives.

Scene 1 Key Quotes

- "Tis not long after but I will wear my heart uopn my sleeve for the daws to peck at." -If they knew what lurked in his heart they would destroy it as he is not loyal.


- "I am not what I am."- Iago never shows his true emotions, ironjc as he is telling the truth about his dishonesty.


- "I follow him to serve my turn upon him: we cannot all be masters, nor all masters cannot be truly follow'd." -Othello is not fit to lead, suggestion of mutiny.


- "An old black ram is tupping you white ewe." - evil racism juxtaposes innocence and purity, animalistic and sexualised make it seem like marriage is a sin.

Scene 2 Sunmary

- Iago warns Othello that Brabantio know of the affair and will try and break them apart.


- Brabantio accuses Othello of using sorcery to seduce and trick Desdemona.


- Brabantio calls for Othello's arrest but he is summoned by the Duke.

Scene 2 Analysis

- When Iago warns Othello it shows him as the antagonist, he tricks Othello, by staying on his side will recive constant info that will lead to his downfall, uses facade to gain loyalty.


- Othello is accused of stealing Desdemona as she would not marry below her social status, it would ruin the family name and Brabantio loses power over Desdemona, racist so feel catharsis for Othello.


- Mass of messengers sent by the Duke give Othello power as he is irreplaceable in the eyes of authority.

Scene 3 Summary

- The Turkish fleet is expected to attack Cyprus so Othello is to lead the defence.


- Brabantio demands proof that Desdemona has not been betwitched.


- She confesses her love.


- They leave for Cyprus.


- Emilia is to be Desdemona's maid.


- Roderigo talks of suicide but Iago convices him to go to Cyprus.


- Iago hears rumours of Othello sleeping with Emilia but doesn't believe them.

Scene 3 Analysis

- Accused of sorcery due to racism. Brabantio's shallowness is apparent but shows personal when he accepts the truth for his daughter's happiness.


- Gains power and respect now he has won over Brabantio

Scene 3 Key Quotes

- "If virtue no delighted beauty lack, your son-in-law is far more fair than black." -term meaning he possesses goodness. He rises above stereotypes and prejudice.


- "Put money in thy purse." -embedding in Roderigo's mind for exploitation. Puppet master image.


- "I hate the Moor."


- "monstous birth."- expessed sexual and physical desire, informs audience of evil brilliance, repreated through the play.

Main Themes

- Prejudice- racial towards Othello. Desdemona ignored it although Othello is deeply aware of it making him seem dirty and sexual and less equal.


- Jealousy- Roderigo hates Othello as he has Desdemona. Iago hates him as he is jealous of Cassio.


- Military- Othello is a soldier which gives him more power and respect.


- Pride- Othello is proud of his achievments and his alleged affair hurt his pride.


- Magic- Othello is accused of sorcery due to his colour.
