Test for hydrogen

Light a splint put in test tube, if it makes a loud popping noise from the explosion, its hydrogen

Test for carbon dioxide

Put in limewater, if it turns cloudy its carbon dioxide

Test for carbonates

add acid: hydrochloric , nitric or sulphuric, if it fizzes, its a carbonate

Test for halides

Add nitric acid, then add silver nitrate, if it makes a white precipitate, its Chloride, cream is Bromide and yellow is Iodide

Tests for positive ions

Add sodium hydroxide, if it makes a white precipitate, add excess sodium hydroxide, if it dissolves its aluminium 3+, otherwise its either calcium or magnesium,do a flame test to find out. If it makes a coloured precipitate, it'll either be iron 3+ (brown), iron 2+ (green) or copper 2+ (blue)

Test for sulfates

Add dilute hydrochloric acid, then add barium chloride, if it makes a white precipitate, its a sulfate
