Chemistry |
The study of the composition and properties of matter and the changes it undergoes. |
Matter |
Anything that has mass and occupies space |
Macroscopic level |
The level at which we directly observce our senses |
Crystal Lattice |
the microscopic structure of solids. a rigid, organized particle structure of repeating patterns. particles move very little, more of a slight vibration. May be of different shapes. |
Do liquids have a definite shape and volume? |
No definite shape, but a definite volume. |
Why don't liquids have a definite shape? |
The particles are farther apart than solids, so the attractive forces aren't as strong. However, these attractive forces are strong enough to keep the substance confined in one large (liquid) mass instead of going all over the place. |
Why don't gases have a definite shape or volume? |
Particles are much farther apart than they are on solids or liquids, and they're moving relatively independent of each other. The gqs therefore expands to fill the area that contains it, thus having no definite shape. |
